The World Health Organization (WHO) has expressed regret over President Donald Trump's announcement of America's separation from this world organization. At the same time, WHO has expressed hope that America will reconsider its decision and engage in constructive dialogue to maintain the partnership.
Trump took this decision immediately after taking oath
Donald Trump signed an executive order on Monday, shortly after being sworn in, beginning the process to pull the US out of the WHO. This is the second time in less than five years that the US has ordered a withdrawal from the global body.
Trump has been criticizing WHO
Trump has long been a critic of the WHO. During his first term, he had tried to separate the US from this global health organization, but his successor Joe Biden stopped this plan. Trump has signed an executive order, which said that the President is sending a letter to the United Nations Secretary General, in which he will be formally informed about the US withdrawal plan.
America will reconsider this-WHO
The WHO said in a statement, 'The World Health Organization regrets the announcement that the US wants to withdraw from the organization. We hope that the US will reconsider this and we look forward to engaging in constructive dialogue to maintain the partnership between the US and WHO for the health and well-being of millions of people around the world.'
WHO works on these things
WHO plays a vital role in protecting the health of the world's people, including Americans, by getting to the roots of diseases, building stronger health systems, and detecting, preventing, and responding to health emergencies, including disease outbreaks, often in dangerous places where others cannot go, the statement said.
America has been among the founding members
The US was a founding member of the WHO in 1948 and has since participated in shaping and driving the work of the global health body through its active participation on its Executive Board and alongside 193 other Member States, the statement said.
