Chennai: A major accident was averted near Villupuram railway station on Tuesday morning. A passenger train carrying passengers suddenly derailed here. According to the information received, five coaches of the passenger train derailed. However, the train was stopped immediately after hearing the sound, thus a major accident was averted. After this accident, the way was cleared for other trains. The other passengers sitting in the train have been evacuated safely. 

Accident averted

Railway Public Relations Officer said that five coaches of a passenger train going from Villupuram to Puducherry derailed near Villupuram railway station. The train was stopped immediately after hearing a loud sound. A major accident was averted due to the train stopping. After stopping the train, all the passengers were safely evacuated from the train. Railway employees and engineers reached the spot and are actively working to repair the derailed train. Railway employees cleared the way for other trains after a lot of hard work. Officials said that at present the officials are investigating whether the incident was caused by a technical fault or not. At the same time, Villupuram Railway Police has also started an in-depth investigation into the matter.

The incident happened at 5.30 am

It is being told that the passenger train was going from Villupuram to Puducherry carrying about 500 passengers. The train left Villupuram at 5.25 am. The train was crossing a curve when one of its coaches derailed. The derailment of the coach made such a loud noise that the loco pilot heard it and immediately stopped the train. Due to this accident, train services on the Villupuram route were disrupted till 8.30 am. Let us tell you that Villupuram-Puducherry MEMU is a short distance train, which covers a distance of about 38 km.
