New Delhi: Famous film director Shyam Benegal died on Monday evening at 6.30 pm. He breathed his last at the age of 90. On this occasion, many Bollywood celebrities and politicians have expressed condolences. The country's President Draupadi Murmu and PM Modi have also expressed grief over Benegal's death. Benegal is credited with introducing parallel cinema in Indian cinema through films like 'Ankur', 'Nishant' and 'Manthan' in the 1970s and 1980s.

President Draupadi Murmu said, "The demise of Shyam Benegal marks the end of a glorious chapter in Indian cinema and television. He ushered in a new kind of cinema and produced many classic films. A true institution, he groomed many actors and artistes. His exceptional contribution was recognised with several awards, including the Dadasaheb Phalke Award and the Padma Bhushan. My condolences to his family members and his countless fans."

PM Modi said, 'Deeply saddened by the demise of Shri Shyam Benegal Ji, whose storytelling had a profound impact on Indian cinema. His works will continue to be admired by people from various walks of life. Condolences to his family and fans. Om Shanti.'

What did the Chief Minister of Maharashtra say?

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said, "It is a sad occasion that renowned director Shyam Benegal has passed away. He brought parallel cinema to the forefront. He received several national awards. His service to Indian cinema is incomparable and his demise is the end of an era. I pay tribute to the departed soul."

Eknath Shinde said that Indian film director and screenwriter Shyam Benegal passed away. The death of veteran director Padmashree Shyam Benegal, who presented the struggles and questions of the common man through films, has left a huge void in the film industry. The stories and issues he presented in his films were thought-provoking and shocking. With the death of senior film director Shyam Benegal, the film industry has lost an artist who commented effectively on social issues.

Naveen Patnaik also expressed grief

Leader of Opposition in Odisha Assembly Naveen Patnaik also condoled the death of Shyam Benegal and called him a 'pioneer' of Indian cinema. Patnaik said that his condolences are with Benegal's family, friends and fans.
