The National Medical Commission (NMC) has given an important directive to all medical colleges and medical institutions. This directive has been issued in view of the rape-murder incident of a PG trainee doctor in Kolkata. The NMC said that medical colleges and hospitals should create a safe environment for all employees including faculty, students and resident doctors in their respective campuses. For this, all should make a policy and implement it in their respective institutions.

Make a policy for a safe environment

The directive states that in recent times, incidents of violence against doctors have been reported in medical colleges. The NMC further said, "All medical colleges are requested to formulate a policy for a safe environment for all staff including faculty, medical students and resident doctors in the college and hospital premises." It has been said to ensure adequate security measures.

There is also talk of installing CCTV

The directive further states that campuses which have corridors should be well-lit in the evening so that the staff can move from one place to another safely. Also, CCTV cameras should be installed in all sensitive areas for surveillance. It further states that any incident of violence against medical students should be immediately investigated by the college management and an FIR should be lodged with the police.
