A small plane crashed in the popular tourist city of Gramado in Brazil on Sunday, killing 10 passengers and crew members, Brazil's civil protection agency said. The plane first hit a chimney of a house, then hit the second floor of a building before crashing into a mobile phone shop in a main residential area of ​​Gramado, the civil protection agency said in a post on X. More than a dozen people on the ground were injured and were taken to hospital, two of whom were said to be in critical condition. 

It was not immediately clear what caused the crash. According to Brazil's civil protection agency, all 10 passengers and crew on board the plane were killed and more than a dozen people on the ground were injured.

The condition of two injured is critical

Brazil's civil protection agency said in a post on X that the plane first hit a chimney of a house, then the second floor of a building, after which it crashed into a mobile phone shop located in a large residential area of ​​Gramado. More than a dozen people who were near the mobile phone shop were troubled by smoke and debris from the plane fell on them. This caused them to suffer injuries. All the injured were taken to hospital, two of whom are said to be in critical condition. It is not yet clear what caused the accident.

"My city is in mourning, after everything we have suffered in Gramado and we are trying to get back on our feet, this tragedy has come to light. The plane with registration PR-NDN that crashed on Av. Central in Gramado has shocked the whole city, there were 9 people on board. May God console the families for this irreparable loss," wrote an X user. 

All the people were from the same family

Local media reported that the passengers on board the plane were members of the same family and were traveling to Sao Paulo state from another city in Rio Grande do Sul state. Gramado is located in the Serra Gaúcha mountains and is popular with Brazilian tourists who enjoy the cool weather, hiking destinations and traditional architecture. The city was settled by a large number of German and Italian immigrants in the 19th century and is a popular destination for Christmas holidays.
