A similar incident was witnessed a day before the boat capsized. Moroccan authorities had rescued 36 people from a boat a day before. This boat had left Mauritania on January 2 with 86 migrants. 66 Pakistanis were also among these migrants. The CEO of Walking Borders has informed on social media that 44 of the people who drowned were from Pakistan.

On the other hand, a convoy of 35 vehicles carrying food and medical supplies was attacked with rockets on Thursday in Pakistan's Kurram district. One soldier was killed in this attack.
