Ottawa: The Supreme Court of Canada on Thursday granted bail to four Indians arrested in connection with the murder of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. According to reports, the release order was issued after the proceedings were stayed in the lower court due to lack of evidence. Now the hearing of this case will be held in a Canadian court on February 11. In the case of Nijjar's murder, four Indian citizens Karan Barad, Amandeep Singh, Kamalpreet Singh and Karanpreet Singh are facing charges of first degree murder and conspiracy to murder.
Canada blames India
Pro-Khalistan terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar was killed in Surrey, British Columbia in June 2023. The case made international headlines when Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged that the Indian government was involved in Nijjar's murder. India rejected this claim as baseless. India demanded evidence from Canada, which till date Canadian agencies have not been able to provide.
Indians were arrested
In May 2024, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police arrested four Indians from different places in Canada and claimed their involvement in the murder. However, the prosecution faced criticism for delaying the presentation of evidence during the preliminary hearing.
Bail application was filed in the court
The Canadian police could not produce any concrete evidence against the accused. The chargesheet was filed against the four Indians in November 2024. They had filed an application for bail in the Supreme Court of Canada, which was later accepted. According to court documents, three accused appeared for the hearing through video conferencing, while one was represented by a lawyer.
