California Pacific Storm: A part of the Santa Cruz pier in the US state of California was damaged on Monday due to a powerful storm. During this, two people were rescued, while the third person managed to swim to safety. A part of the Santa Cruz pier collapsed when heavy waves arose due to a big storm on the coast. Stormy winds are expected due to the storm. People living near the Santa Cruz pier were warned to avoid low-lying beach areas due to the intensification of the storm. People here were also instructed to move to safer places. 

What did the mayor say?

Santa Cruz Mayor Fred Keely said lifeguards rescued two people after a section of the pier collapsed, although no one was reported seriously injured, reports the Associated Press. The pier was undergoing a $4 million renovation after being damaged by a storm last winter. The collapsed section, which was closed for repairs, included restrooms and the 'Dolphin' restaurant. 

Santa Cruz Wharf was built in 1914

The Santa Cruz pier was built in 1914 and has been featured in several movies, including 'The Lost Boys.' About 150 feet of the pier collapsed into the water during the accident. Officials said the area will remain closed indefinitely because of the dangers posed by the debris.

Waves can rise up to 30 feet high

Meteorologists have warned against surfing on the west coast. Waves up to 30 feet high can rise in the sea. The National Weather Service has also warned people to stay away from the sea due to dangerous conditions.
