With the beginning of the new year, big news has come from the cricket world. This news is related to Bangladesh cricket. The captain of the Bangladesh cricket team has decided to leave his post. There was speculation for many days that Nazmul Hussain Shanto might leave the captaincy of the team in the shortest format of cricket. This has now been confirmed. Nazmul Hussain Shanto has decided to step down from the post of captain of Bangladesh's T20I team. Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) official confirmed on January 2.
Nazmul had earlier decided to step down from T20 captaincy after the 2024 World Cup but later changed his mind and expressed his desire to resign from all three formats. His decision not to captain any format was reversed after BCB president Farooq Ahmed got involved in the matter and the left-hander was made captain for the three-match ODI series against Afghanistan. There, he suffered an injury.
The new captain has not been announced yet
A top BCB official told Cricbuzz that Shanto finally told us that he will not captain in T20Is and we accepted it. Since there are no T20I matches right now, we have time and hence we are not choosing a new captain. He said that if there are no injury issues then Nazmul will remain the captain in Tests and ODIs and we have discussed it.
Will captain in Champions Trophy
It is believed that Liton Das, who said he is open to long-term T20 captaincy after the 3-0 series win over West Indies, is set to continue as skipper in the shortest format. However, Nazmul Hasan Shanto will be seen captaining Bangladesh in the upcoming Champions Trophy. There was speculation that Mehidy Hasan might take charge of the team after he was named as the stand-in captain for Tests and ODIs on the West Indies tour where the regular skipper was ruled out due to injury.
