World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus narrowly escaped the bombing at Sanaa Airport in Yemen. At the time of the bombing, Tedros was about to board a plane with his colleagues from the United Nations and the World Health Organization. The WHO Director-General himself has revealed this in a social media post.

Bombing happened just a few meters away

Tedros wrote that the bombing started when he and his colleagues were about to board the plane. One of our crew members was injured in this attack. Two people were killed at the airport. The air traffic control tower, the departure lounge - bombing took place just a few meters from where we were and the runways were damaged. Now we have to wait until the damage to the airport is repaired, only then we can leave from there. My UN colleagues and WHO colleagues are safe. We express our heartfelt condolences to the families whose loved ones have lost their lives in the attack.

In fact, Israel is continuously attacking Houthi bases. In this sequence, it also bombed Sanaa. When this bombing took place, the WHO Director General was present at Sanaa Airport. He had reached Yemen to release those United Nations employees who have been held hostage by Houthi fighters for the last several months.

UN chief condemns attack on Tedros

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres condemned the attack and called for respect for international law. He stressed that civilians and humanitarian workers should never be targeted.

In a post on social media X, Guterres regretted the recent escalation between Yemen and Israel and described the airstrikes on Sana'a International Airport, Red Sea ports and power stations in Yemen as dangerous. According to the UN chief, the airstrikes have reportedly caused numerous casualties, with at least three people killed and dozens injured. He reiterated the call on all parties to cease military action and exercise restraint.
