International: The 2024 US presidential election is around the corner, before that Republican Party candidate and former President Donald Trump's troubles may increase. US Justice Department's special counsel Jack Smith has filed an appeal to re-prosecute former President Donald Trump for trying to interfere in the 2020 US presidential election.
In fact, in this appeal, the previous criminal cases against Trump have been kept intact, but after the Supreme Court's comment that there is exemption for some works of the former President's office, the charges against Trump have been reduced.
Additional charges filed - Smith
"An additional charge was filed today in the DC election interference case. This streamlines the allegations and supporting evidence in the original charge, taking into account the US Supreme Court's decision regarding executive immunity," Smith said on X.
Allegations sidestep mini trial
Jack Smith further said that this bypasses the mini trial to determine the charges. The DOJ has stated its position on this allegation. Most of the allegations against Donald Trump are outside the scope of immunity.
